I spent seven years teaching in American classrooms before I wrote software anyone paid for. Now I'm at Apptegy, building internal Rails tools and the test automation the engineering org runs on. The two jobs have more in common than they sound — both are mostly about explaining something clearly to someone who has other plans.
Apptegy builds software for schools, so I never really left. Destiny or doom, I haven't decided.
A small weather tool that adds up how much rain fell at any location over any range of dates. Rails, a couple of open APIs for weather and geocoding, and a machine in my house serving it through a Cloudflare tunnel. It is the project I keep coming back to.

Apptegy · 2020 – Present
Built the company's test automation framework from nothing: Selenium and Cucumber first, then a migration to Playwright that made the suite roughly three times faster. I maintain the Jenkins pipelines it runs on, write Rails tooling for test data that can't reasonably be produced by hand, and run K6 load tests when we need to know where things break.
